Eating Disorder Treatment Packages

Specialist Eating Disorder Service

Breathe offers a specialist eating disorder help service which operates in accordance with National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and Kings College London Guidelines.

Breathe provide a research based, needs-led, therapeutic treatment approach for all types of eating distress and obesity management. This includes treatment for Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-Eating Disorder, EDNOS, Compulsive Eating, and failed dieting.

Breathe has a multi-disciplinary approach and has a multi-disciplinary team of Clinical Psychologist, qualified nurses, psychotherapists, counsellors and dieticians. Practitioners work alongside GPs, Practice Nurses, Consultant Psychiatrists, Social Workers, CMHT and any other services relevant to the individuals’ treatment needs. The family, where appropriate, are invited and involved in the treatment process from the outset and family sessions are offered.

Breathe Therapies eating disorder treatment service is designed to provide treatment and support for individuals over the age of 18, experiencing eating distress or weight management difficulties. The service is provided on an outpatient basis, using the stepped care model to offer different levels and intensities of treatment dependent on each individual at the appropriate stage of their recovery.

Breathe care packages are based on a 12 week period, and are reviewed continually throughout this time frame. An individual would usually utilise one 12 week package of each level of treatment, however some individuals may require more or less treatment. Prior to commencement of treatment within our service, Breathe Eating Disorder Service must receive a referral from one of the following clinicians: GP, Social Worker, Psychiatrist, the Community Mental Health Team or a self referral for private clients.

Following receipt of this referral form, a request for funding will be actioned and following confirmation of the acceptance of funding, treatment can commence.

On initial contact, the client will undergo a 2 hour assessment observing the clients appropriateness for our service. This will be carried out by a specialist clinician experienced in the field of eating disorders. An individualised treatment plan will be developed including the following interventions:

Physical monitoring: i.e. Early warning Scores, relevant bloods in liaison via GP

Height, Weight, and Body Mass Index

Specialist Nurse Review

Risk Assessment and co-ordination of care

Specialist Dietician

The individuals care package will be overseen by an allocated Breathe Care Co-ordinator along with close liaison with their GP. Breathe’s programme utilises the individuals’ most appropriate learning and engagement style E.g: use of creative/art interventions, writing, relaxation and a variety of therapeutic interventions, to enable them to gain an understanding of the functioning and reasoning behind the eating disorder as well as precipitating, perpetuating and predisposing factors that sustain their illness.

Motivational Enhancement tools are used to promote change and recovery from the illness, once an understanding of these factors has been gained. The collaborative working with the sister organisation Support and Education for Eating Disorders allows the client to feel empowered as added value. In addition to the therapeutic intervention and self help services we have a range of self-help services clients can access to aid recovery and support for their carers e.g.: library service with a range of self-help resources.
